Defining problem space

According to the World Health Organization, around 1.3 million people die in road traffic accidents, with pedestrians accounting for more than half. The elderly and those with physical impairments, are at more risk as they experience difficulties in crossing roads within the designated time frame in comparison to other pedestrians. This pushed us to highlight the necessity for improved and inclusive road infrastructure.

The motivation behind this project is for the welfare of the physically impaired community, which includes the standardized "100세 시대”; the increasing aging population in Korea, as well as individuals with physical disabilities.

We will be creating an IoT device that communicates between the reduced mobility user and the pedestrian counter.

The user context is Seoul pedestrian crossings, while the user goal is to safely cross Seoul streets within the allotted time of transit lights.

Given our user’s hands could be already occupied by assistive devices that help them walk such as crutches, wheelchairs, canes, etc. they require our device to be wearable, and have easy access to its functions. Moreover, it should ensure the pedestrian crosses safely through a manual control of the timer.

Stakeholders we should consider include the Government, Hospital, and KoRoad(도로교통공단).
